Description / Note:: Over a 30 year period, Lord Chesterfield (1694-1773) corresponded with his illegitimate son Philip Stanhope (1737-1768) providing advice on navigating society and the manners and ways of a gentleman. Upon the death of Chesterfield, Philip’s mother published the letters in 1774 as Letters to His Son on the Act of Becoming a Man of the World and a Gentleman.
