Early 18th Century Queen Anne Japanned Secretary Bookcase, H. 88 in. x W. 38 in. x D. 22.5 in.
An early 18th-century Queen Anne japanned secretary bookcase, circa 1730, combining refined proportions with practical design. The upper cabinet, with its elegant arched form, opens to shelving, while the fall-front reveals a fitted interior of drawers and pigeonholes for writing.
The black japanned surface, decorated with gilt chinoiserie, reflects England’s fascination with Asian lacquerwork during the period, often contrasted by a richly colored interior. Raised on bracket feet, the piece is both architectural and functional.
A striking example of Queen Anne craftsmanship, it serves equally well as storage, workspace, and statement piece.
