This early 1900s antique Bokhara rug features a classic and highly recognizable design defined by its repeating gul motifs arranged in a precise grid across a rich red field. The pattern is symmetrical and tightly organized, giving the rug a strong visual structure while maintaining the softness expected from a handwoven textile.
The field is dominated by deep crimson and burgundy tones that have naturally matured over time, creating subtle variation and depth in the color. Each gul is outlined in darker tones and filled with ivory, rust, and dark blue accents, producing contrast without overpowering the composition. Smaller geometric details are placed between the guls, adding intricacy and movement throughout the surface.
The borders are layered and well-defined. The main border features repeating geometric elements, while the top and bottom edges display larger diamond-shaped motifs with bold angular designs. These borders frame the central field and reinforce the rug’s tribal character.
The weave is dense and consistent, with visible texture and a soft, worn-in feel. Condition shows even wear across the surface, with areas of slight pile reduction and minor fading consistent with age. The edges and corners display light wear, and the fringe remains present with some natural irregularity. The rug lies well and remains structurally sound.
This piece is a strong example of traditional Bokhara weaving, offering both bold pattern and warmth, suitable for a variety of interiors.
