Painting: 21.85 x 26.96 in frame: 28.93 x 35.82 in edmund mahlknecht (*12.11.1820 vienna † 26.02.1903 vienna) a leading austrian landscape and animal painter of the 19th century. He is regarded as a key figure of the vienna school, who carried on the tradition of landscape painting featuring animals (often cattle, sheep or goats) well into the late 19th century. Mahlknecht specialised in atmospheric, late-romantic depictions of the alpine regions, particularly the salzkammergut. His works frequently depict grazing herds on lakeshores, shepherds in mountain landscapes, or scenes of rural life in a tranquil, idyllic atmosphere. His style was significantly influenced by his teacher franz steinfeld and, in particular, by the art of friedrich gauermann mahlknecht regularly took part in exhibitions organised by the austrian art association and the vienna academy, and was a member of the vienna künstlerhaus from 1861. Among other things, he worked as an art teacher at the house of saxe-coburg and gotha. Award: received an honorary diploma at the 1879 world’s fair in sydney.
