A rare and beautifully conceived English Victorian hanging magazine rack in oak, featuring an elaborately constructed central bobbin lattice panel that elevates the piece well above ordinary domestic storage into the realm of decorative furniture. The piece is a compelling expression of the Aesthetic Movement taste for reformist objects that combined honest materials and craft process with strong graphic effect, consistent with the principles popularised and widely adopted by progressive British manufacturers during the 1870s and 1880s.
The rack is constructed on a rectangular oak frame and designed to hang flat against a wall, suspended by original brass link chains from wall-mounted brass hooks. The central panel is a tight grid of turned bobbin spindles intersecting at turned bead nodes, creating a dense lattice of considerable visual sophistication. This panel is set within a frame of horizontal rails and turned uprights terminating in ball finials. A lower register of closely spaced vertical spindles forms the magazine well itself, designed to hold periodicals, sheet music, or correspondence upright and on display. The angled profile visible from the side confirms the functional geometry of the storage compartment.
NOTE: Chain 6.5" long
