The barrel of Italian origin is constructed in the traditional coopered manner from hand-shaped oak staves, bound by four substantial iron hoops secured with hand-cut rivets. The staves have developed a rich amber and tobacco-brown patina, darkening toward the hoops where iron and oak have interacted over decades. The grain of the oak is clearly visible across the stave faces, lending the surface a natural warmth and texture. A turned wooden spigot plug is retained in the lower body and confirms the piece's working provenance.

Barrels of this scale and quality of construction were used across a range of trades including wine, spirits, beer, and dry goods.
