An exceptional and grand late 19th-century maritime oil on canvas painting depicting the historic passenger clipper ship "James Baines," signed by artist DeGechy. The composition beautifully captures the majestic timber vessel under full sail cut against an atmospheric sky, showcasing its rare moonsail rigging navigating choppy ocean waters. The clipper ship was originally constructed in 1854 by the celebrated American master shipbuilder Donald McKay for the British Black Ball Line.
The canvas is excellently housed in its original, heavily molded late Victorian gilt frame featuring deep multi-tiered classical reed detailing. The reverse backing retains a valuable historic hand-written chronicle note detailing the vessel's construction and legendary maritime speed records.
Condition Note:
The painting displays a gorgeous, authentic antique patina with stable scattered craquelure and minor historic paint flaking to the surface that beautifully underscores its 19th-century heritage. Frame is tight, heavy, and structurally sound.
