Mid-Century Transition Chest of Drawers

This distinctive piece is crafted from walnut veneer (the wood grain is visible on the front and sides) applied to a solid wood frame. The warm, deep brown varnish finish is in excellent condition and beautifully highlights the walnut grain.

Style Details:
The chest of drawers features an elegant, subtly curved front, characteristic of the Transition style, which blends the lightness of Rococo (cabriole legs, bronze sabots, scalloped rails) with a more restrained geometry foreshadowing Neoclassicism. The woodwork is remarkable:
• Drawer Fronts: These are decorated with walnut veneer arranged in "leaves" within reserves framed by sinuous moldings in darker-stained walnut, creating a subtle contrast.

• The Top: It is entirely made of solid walnut, with a molded edge that echoes the curved shape of the piece.

• The Sides: The large side panel is also walnut veneer, adorned with a wide, peripheral molding that highlights the quality of the craftsmanship (the panel's simplicity suggests a Directoire style influence).
Fittings:
All the hardware (fixed drawer pulls, keyhole escutcheons, front foot caps, and lower rail ornament) is original and made of patinated bronze. The rocaille motifs (foliage, scrolls) are exquisitely executed.
Condition:
The chest of drawers is in remarkable condition. The wood shows no cracks, veneer chips, or significant marks. The varnish is very clean and bright. The drawers slide perfectly. There are a few minor signs of wear.
