A striking and highly textural monumental figurative sculpture by American artist Naida Seibel, signed and dated (’88?) at the base.
Standing an impressive 43.5 inches tall, this sculptural figure exemplifies Seibel’s signature fusion of materials and her deep connection to Southwestern aesthetics. The work combines ceramic, hand-worked textiles, rope, and shell embellishments with cast brass elements, including a serene, mask-like face and expressive feet. The layered construction creates a rich tactile surface, with intricate weaving and applied adornments that give the piece both visual rhythm and sculptural depth.
Seibel was known for blending disciplines—ceramics, fiber, and painting—into cohesive, highly individual works. Her sculptures often evoke a quiet, totemic presence, and this piece is no exception, with a strong vertical form and meditative expression.
This sculpture is part of a larger set of three figures, each sold individually. This example is the largest of the group, making it particularly impactful as a standalone statement piece.
Naida Seibel (1933–2026) earned her BFA from Colorado State University and maintained an active career spanning decades, with work exhibited throughout the Southwest and held in numerous private and public collections. Her practice was especially influenced by her years in Santa Fe, where she developed her distinctive mixed-media style.
