The whimsical cube shaped trunk features a distinctive polychromed striped canvas covered frame with patinated brass tack nail heads, hinges, and lock plates. The exterior is missing one of its original leather handles as seen in photos. The interior still retains its original webbing supports. The steamer trunk was used extensively by Emily Taylor Andrews with her prominent initials stenciled on the sides E.T.A. and evidence of her European charters. The trunk has a beautifully aged patina commensurate its age and use. The trunk is solid and sturdy having strong joinery and craftsmanship. Crouch & Fitzgerald was a prestigious New York-based luxury trunk and leather goods maker established in 1839, renowned for high-quality craftsmanship, including custom pieces for clients like FDR. The trunk could also serve as a side, end, or drinks table. Provenance: From the collection of Adolphus Andrews Jr. and Emily Taylor Andrews (Emmy and Dolph), San Francisco, CA. Mr. Andrews served as a longtime trustee to the boards of the de Young Museum, and The Palace of the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco, CA.
