This antique Samarkand rug features a striking and structured composition centered around a series of repeating medallions arranged vertically across a vibrant red field. The design is symmetrical and balanced, with each medallion enclosed within soft geometric outlines and filled with intricate internal motifs.
The primary field is a rich, warm red tone that has softened over time, giving the rug a slightly muted and aged character. The medallions are rendered in tones of beige, ivory, and soft gray, creating contrast against the background while maintaining an overall harmonious palette. Additional smaller geometric elements are placed between the medallions, adding rhythm and visual movement throughout the composition.
The border is highly defined, featuring a bold geometric pattern resembling a Greek key motif in darker tones, framed by an outer border with stylized floral elements. This layered border structure creates a strong frame around the central field and enhances the rug’s overall presence.
The weave is consistent and dense, with visible texture across the surface. There is even wear throughout, including slight fading in the field and minor irregularities along the edges. The corners and ends show light age-related wear, consistent with an antique textile of this type. The pile remains intact, and the rug is structurally sound.
This piece works well as a statement rug due to its bold color and clear geometric layout, while still retaining the subtle patina and character expected from an antique Samarkand weaving.
