One of the most desirable early maps of colonial America, this striking Blaeu engraving captures Virginia and the Chesapeake at the moment of first English settlement, featuring Jamestown and the Powhatan territories in remarkable detail. Combining cartographic importance with vivid narrative imagery, the map includes one of the earliest printed depictions of indigenous life in North America, making it a centerpiece work for collectors of early American history. This finely engraved and beautifully hand-colored map, titled Nova Virginiae Tabula, was published by Willem Blaeu in his celebrated Toonneel des Aerdrycx atlas around 1640. Based on the seminal explorations of Captain John Smith, it presents the Chesapeake Bay region with an accuracy and richness that marked a major advance in the European understanding of the American coastline. The map depicts the Virginia colony in detail, including Jamestown, the James River, and numerous early settlements and indigenous place names. The Chesapeake Bay forms the geographic heart of the composition, with rivers and tributaries extending deep into the interior. The surrounding landscape is rendered with finely engraved mountains, forests, and settlements, reflecting both observation and interpretation during this early period of exploration. A particularly important feature is the large inset vignette at the upper left, illustrating the court of the Powhatan chief. This ethnographic scene, derived from early English accounts, is among the most iconic images of Native American life to appear on a printed map and greatly enhances both the historical and visual significance of the work. Additional decorative elements include a standing native figure, a royal coat of arms, a compass rose, and an elaborate scale cartouche, all enriched by original hand coloring. Maps of Virginia by Blaeu are among the most sought after of all early American maps, prized for their connection to the founding period of the English colonies. This example stands out for its clarity, strong impression, and balanced composition, making it an exceptional piece for both collectors and high-end interiors. This is an original 17th-century engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The map is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only.
