A highly decorative and evocative 17th-century map of Guiana and the Amazon region by Willem Blaeu, one of the most celebrated cartographers of the Dutch Golden Age, prized for its depiction of one of the most mysterious and sought-after regions of colonial South America. Centered on the legendary interior of the continent, this map captures the allure of early exploration, including the fabled Parime Lacus—long associated with the myth of El Dorado—making it both historically fascinating and visually striking. This finely engraved and beautifully hand-colored map, titled Guiana sive Amazonum Regio, was published in Blaeu’s renowned Toonneel des Aerdrycx atlas around 1642. It depicts the northern part of South America, including present-day Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and northern Brazil, extending from the Caribbean coastline into the vast and largely unknown interior. The map features major river systems such as the Amazon and Orinoco, alongside mountain ranges and coastal settlements, reflecting early European attempts to understand and map this remote region. At its center lies the enigmatic Parime Lacus, a mythical inland lake believed by early explorers to be the gateway to immense riches. This association with El Dorado gives the map a strong narrative appeal that continues to captivate collectors. Blaeu enriches the composition with elegant decorative elements, including sailing ships in the Atlantic, a finely engraved compass rose, and a large, ornate title cartouche framed with foliage and ribbons. A secondary cartouche provides scale, while original hand coloring enhances the geographic clarity and adds warmth to the overall composition. Maps of Guiana and the Amazon from Blaeu’s atlas are particularly valued for their combination of decorative beauty and the enduring fascination with early exploration myths. This example stands out for its balanced composition, clear engraving, and strong visual presence, making it an ideal piece for collectors and interior settings alike. This is an original 17th-century engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The map is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only.
