Created as a votive offering to the gods, it was installed in a sanctuary on the island of Samothrace and is now housed in the Louvre, Paris. Elevated above its surroundings, the figure once commanded distant views, asserting both presence and power. Nike, the winged goddess of victory, is captured at the moment of descent, just as she alights upon the prow of a ship. Her forward momentum, swept drapery and outstretched wings convey triumph in motion—an eternal announcement of victory, suspended in stone.
