Large bronze sculpture with a brown patina, depicting Mary Stuart: a young woman in elegant and refined attire, adorned with lace and jewelry.
She holds a quill and a letter, resting on a pedestaled box with a baby. The casting and detail are of exceptional quality!
The artist, Mathurin Moreau, signed the sculpture on the base.
Mary Stuart (1542–1587) was Queen of Scotland whose life was marked by political intrigue and religious conflict. Becoming Queen of Scotland just days after her birth, she was sent to France where she received the education to become Queen of France, following her marriage to Francis II.
After her husband's death, she returned to Scotland, where the country was divided between Catholics and Protestants.
Her reign was unstable: she remarried several times, notably to Lord Darnley, whose assassination weakened her political position. Accused of involvement in this murder and facing revolts, she was forced to abdicate in favor of her son.
She fled to England, hoping for the support of her cousin, Elizabeth I. But Elizabeth considered her a threat to the throne and imprisoned her for nearly 20 years. Finally, accused of conspiracy, Mary Stuart was condemned to death and executed in 1587.
Mary Stuart became a legendary figure, a martyred queen with a tragic destiny, a symbol of female heroism, and a representative figure in all artistic movements, such as painting, poetry, and sculpture.
Mathurin Moreau (1822–1912) was one of the greatest French sculptors of the 19th century, famous for his decorative works. The son of a sculptor, he studied in Paris and won the Prix de Rome. He created numerous statues, fountains, and ornaments that can be seen in several cities in France and abroad. His elegant, academic style is in keeping with the artistic tradition of his time.
Today, his works are still highly sought after and even exhibited in museums.
