Mihajlo Đoković Tikal was born on January 1, 1941, in Čačak. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown. Interestingly, Tikal showed little interest in drawing as a young man; his first drawing appeared only in seventh grade, in a math notebook. His restless temperament, imagination, and irony are already evident in his earliest surviving drawings. After finishing secondary school, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he still lives and works. He is a member of ULUS (University of the Arts of Belgrade). He describes himself as nostalgic and solitary, but also a true hedonist and optimist. On a broader, European scale, Mihajlo Đoković Tikal's painting can be classified as neo-surrealism. He belongs to that group of artists who, within the framework of classical painting, borrowed only certain details from nature to provide themselves and the viewer with a more secure point of reference. However, the true realm of his interest and creative outlet will be the free journey of the imagination through the unexplored reaches of the subconscious—that is, esotericism.
