Two twin bed frames have been in the attic of our house in Brookline, MA, since we moved here in 1968 . They were owned by the previous owners who indicated that they had them likely as far back as when the house was first built in 1910. They are of solid construction, likely made of maple or mohogany, fitted together and secured with round-headed nails of an early 20th century type. The headboard and baseboard each have wicker inset panels and carved bead and reel patterns framed by interlaced details.
They measure 82 1/4 in (length), 42 1/4 in (width), 46 1/4 in (height at headboard), 32 1/8 in (height at baseboard), and take box springs measuring 79 1/2 in (length) by 38 in (width).
Both beds have a number, 1670, likely a model number, cut into the lower interior surface of the baseboard. Bed A, which is in nearly perfect condition save for a few scratches, currently has a replacement box spring with plastic corners which must date from the early 1960s as well as a replacement mattress.
Bed B, which is in excellent condition save for a rip in the wicker panel of the baseboard, retains its original box spring and mattress. The box spring has a label for the C.B. Swift Company of 19 Charles Street in Boston (Beacon Hill, near the old meeting house), MA, a furniture company that sold beds and other furniture. On the Historic New England website they have a photograph of a pair of twin beds of a different design that are said to be from this company and provisionally dated to the 1950s-1970s (https://www.historicnewengland.org/explore/collections-access/gusn/4765). Based on a metal plate under the headboard rail of those beds (no such metal panel is on our beds) they cite the address of 16 Charles Street rather than 19. Possibly 16 Charles was a later location of the company. Other references to the company give the address of 19 Charles Street, such as here: https://www.historicnewengland.org/explore/collections-access/gusn/4765
The only other information I have found about this company is that it was formerly with the Paine Furniture Company (https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/archival-item/sova-nmah-ac-0060-s01-01-furniture-ref1500), now out of business but that was America's oldest furniture store (https://www.historicnewengland.org/explore/collections-access/gusn/267080).
We have loved having these beds in the house, but we need to down-size and change the purpose of the room on the third floor into an office. We would like to find someone who would enjoy these antique beds and give them an even longer life than they've had so far.
