This late 19th century Persian Malayer gallery rug (circa 1875–1900) is a finely handwoven example of village craftsmanship, distinguished by its character-rich design and natural dye palette. Woven in a long corridor format, the rug features an all-over Herati geometric pattern set against a beautifully varied abrash French blue to navy field.
The subtle tonal shifts in the blue field—created through traditional vegetable dyeing techniques—produce a sought-after abrash effect, adding depth, movement, and an authentic aged patina that enhances the rug’s visual appeal.
The field is complemented by a striking border composition, including a light green (lime) primary border with intricate multicolored motifs in yellow, pink, red, green, and blue. Additional cream-ground border elements introduce further contrast and refinement, creating a layered and visually dynamic frame. Adding to its uniqueness are small stylized animal and human forms woven throughout the design.
