This vintage 3x5 French Aubusson signed tapestry titled “Frémissement”, handmade in wool, is based on a cartoon by Mathieu Matégot (1910–2001), and woven by Ateliers Pinton Frères. This expressive textile reflects the transition of Aubusson weaving into modern artistic movements of the 20th century, blending traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde design language. Signed lower right “Matégot,” affirming its artistic attribution.
On the Design:
The composition departs from classical Aubusson symmetry, embracing a bold, painterly abstraction that reflects Matégot’s modernist vision. The field is animated with layered, gestural forms, suggestive of landscape fragments, movement, and atmospheric shifts, rendered in a dynamic interplay of color and texture.
Dominated by rich terracotta, burnt orange, olive green, and deep black, the palette is punctuated with flashes of ivory and vivid accents, creating a sense of depth and visual rhythm. The overlapping planes and linear accents evoke a sense of motion—true to the title “Frémissement” (meaning “vibration” or “quiver”), as if the surface itself is alive with energy.
Unlike traditional Aubusson carpets with defined borders and medallions, this tapestry adopts a free-form composition, where shapes dissolve into one another and edges feel intentionally fluid. The knotted stitch technique enhances the tactile quality, giving the surface a painterly softness while maintaining structural integrity.
This piece stands as a compelling example of mid- to late-20th-century Aubusson production, where historic weaving ateliers collaborated with leading modern artists to reinterpret textile as fine art.
