The painting depicts a scene of rural daily life set in the second half of the 19th century, specifically in 1867. At the center of the composition are two young boys united by a bond of affection and familiarity. The scene is simple and rustic, and both boys wear traditional clothing rendered in minute detail. In the foreground, several doves are pecking at seeds that have fallen to the ground, while others approach the basket. Their presence adds movement to the scene and underscores the theme of simple life and the care of domestic animals. The style is realistic with influences from European genre painting; the colors are warm but slightly muted, with soft light illuminating the faces and clothing. P.S. Signed lower right: Tommaso De Vivo 1867. Tommaso De Vivo: (Orta di Atella, c. 1790 – Naples, 1884) A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, in 1821, as a scholarship student of the Royal Institute, he moved to Rome, where he frequented the studio of Vincenzo Camuccini, from whom he drew inspiration for his works. He also showed an interest in the French Academy in Rome and in French painting, drawing inspiration from Léopold Robert. He studied primarily at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, and in 1838 he became a member of the Congregation of the Virtuosi at the Pantheon. He participated in numerous editions of the Bourbon Exhibitions with paintings on mythological and historical subjects. Around 1833, he created the drawings for the illustrations of the History of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, published in Rome, and, in the 1840s, three Allegories of the Divine Comedy, commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, who appointed him General Inspector of the Royal Art Galleries. His paintings are housed at the Royal Palace of Naples, the Royal Palace of Caserta, and the Capodimonte Museum. Among his paintings with allegorical and celebratory themes are the Allegory of Strength and Shyness, with Mars and Venus, purchased by Margherita of Savoy in 1869, and Italy and Her Genii, donated to the Italian Senate.
