A stunning example of early American Federal craftsmanship, this two-part secretary bookcase is a true statement piece with exceptional decorative detail and remarkable original condition.
The upper bookcase section features a pair of glazed doors with intricate Gothic diamond-pane muntins, framed by a beautifully inlaid frieze showcasing a central star flanked by pinwheel/crosslet motifs — hallmarks of the Federal period. The interior reveals three generous shelves with an ebonized back, flanked by small drawers below.
The fall-front secretary opens to a well-appointed interior with an array of small drawers and letter compartments — perfect for organizing correspondence in true period style. Below, four graduated drawers with original oval brass bail pulls and subtle string inlay sit on elegant tapered bracket feet.
Likely crafted in cherry or walnut, this piece carries the warmth and patina that only 200+ years of life can bring. Original hardware, original glass panes, and a tight, sturdy structure throughout.
