CHAIRISH LISTING COPY — SAVAROI PAIR
Title:
A Matched Pair of Antique French Military Oil Paintings, Signed Savaroi, 1896, Original Gilt Frames
There are rooms that accumulate meaning slowly. A leather chair worn to the shape of its owner. Shelves heavy with cracked spines. A desk that has absorbed decades of lamplight. These two paintings belong in exactly that room.
Signed by the French artist Savaroi and dated 1896, this matched pair of small-format oil paintings depicts French infantrymen in the tradition of the great Third Republic military painters, Detaille, Neuville, Berne-Bellecour. The first canvas shows a lone soldier at rest in an open landscape, seated against a rock with the red képi and garance trousers of the French army catching the afternoon light. It is a painting about stillness, the pause between marches, the weight of a man thinking. The second is its counterpoint: soldiers moving through a ruined cobblestone street, smoke and broken architecture behind them, all urgency and motion. Together they hold the full register of military life, repose and action, solitude and brotherhood.
Savaroi was a documented French painter working within the established tradition of military genre, and the craftsmanship here is deliberate. The paint is applied with a confident, economical hand. Backgrounds are resolved in broad gestural strokes. Figures are rendered with real structural authority. These are not salon machines ground out for commercial repetition. They are studies with a pulse.
Both works are housed in their original matched gilt composition frames, the ornate acanthus-leaf and anthemion molding of the French Third Republic salon, with the red bole showing through the gilding at the wear points and the mellow oxidation that 130 years produce, and no reproduction ever quite fakes. The frames are structurally sound. They look exactly as they should.
The first painting carries scattered paint losses and a small canvas puncture in the lower figure area. The second shows a historical running canvas crack and corresponding paint loss, the result of an old water event documented on the reverse of the canvas. Both are stable and displayable as-is. A conservator could consolidate either canvas for a fraction of the painting's value. What they have in their current state is something deliberately restored works almost never recover: the unbroken patina of genuine age, the sense that these canvases have been somewhere and seen something.
Hang them flanking a doorway in a library. Center them above a leather-topped desk. Set them against dark paneling or a warm plaster wall above a console crowded with objects that matter. They will do what the best collected art always does: make the room feel inhabited by more than the people currently in it.
Sold as a matched pair. Measurements: H:18" x W:14".
