“Joe Cactus” disappearing ashtray designed by Philippe Starck for Alessi, circa 1990. A defining example of postmodern Italian design, this object transforms a utilitarian form into something sculptural and intentionally ambiguous.
Constructed in molded polycarbonate with a matte burgundy base and black central handle, it features a concealed reservoir activated by a simple lifting mechanism. Contents are deposited out of sight, preserving the visual integrity of the surrounding surface.
Starck’s approach—balancing humor, function, and controlled interaction—is evident throughout. Compact in scale, the piece works equally well as a functional object or as a sculptural accent on a coffee table or bar.
