An exceptional and highly collectible Louis Vuitton Cabin 100 trunk, dating to 1911, executed in the iconic monogram canvas and fitted with black lacquered iron hardware. This is a classic early 20th century Vuitton form, built for travel during the golden age of luxury transport. This particular model is rare to ever see at market.
The trunk is monogrammed “V.B.N.” on both sides, adding a strong sense of personal history and presence.
Dimensions: 13"H x 36"W x 20"D
Craftsmanship throughout is exquisite and unmistakably Vuitton. Every detail reinforces its authenticity and quality: each nail is stamped “Louis Vuitton,” the locks and clasps are engraved “LV,” the wooden slats beneath are marked with the Paris and London addresses, and the exterior leather trim is embossed with LV. The interior ribbon is also marked Louis Vuitton.
The original interior remains intact, including the serial number label reading:
Louis Vuitton #798089
Paris – 70 Champs Élysées
149 New Bond St, London
Nice Cannes Vichy
The interior silk and muslin lining shows staining consistent with age and use. Importantly, there is no mold present. The staining is purely cosmetic, and the fabric can be removed if a collector prefers a clean, hollow interior.
The exterior shows expected wear to the leather trim and canvas, as seen in photos, but remains in overall good condition considering its approximately 115-year age. The structure is solid and the trunk presents beautifully.
A highly desirable example for collectors, designers, or anyone seeking an authentic Louis Vuitton trunk with strong character, clear markings, and early provenance.
Louis Vuitton began as a young apprentice in Paris after traveling there on foot in the 1830s, quickly establishing himself as a skilled box-maker for elite clientele, including Empress Eugénie. He founded his own workshop in 1854 and revolutionized travel with the introduction of the flat-topped, stackable trunk in 1858, replacing the traditional domed form.
As demand grew, Vuitton developed durable, water-resistant materials like Trianon canvas and later introduced distinctive patterns such as striped canvas, Damier, and ultimately the LV monogram in 1896, both as branding and a response to counterfeiting.
The company also innovated technically, notably with its “unpickable” lock system in 1886, reinforcing its reputation for craftsmanship and security. Over time, Vuitton trunks evolved into both functional travel objects and collectible design pieces, with their materials, construction, and markings serving as key tools for dating and authentication.
