A quietly luminous Dutch coastal landscape — thatched farm buildings nestled in the dunes, long grasses bending in the sea wind, a wide Zeeland sky opening above. Painted with the direct, unaffected touch of a painter who knew this land intimately.Attributed by original family label on the verso to Willem Jan van den Berghe (1823–1901) — a documented Dutch painter based in Middelburg, Zeeland, whose work is held in the Zeeuws Museum and has sold at Christie's, the Zeeuws Veilinghuis, and AAG Auctioneers. The handwritten label reads in Dutch: "Domburgset Landschap / door W.J. van den Berghe / overleden te Middelburg / in 1901" — "Domburg landscape / by W.J. van den Berghe / died in Middelburg in 1901." Written posthumously, almost certainly by a family member or estate, connecting this work directly to the artist.Domburg, on the Zeeland coast of the Netherlands, was a celebrated artists' colony that drew Jan Toorop, Piet Mondrian, and many others. Van den Berghe painted this landscape he knew from a lifetime in the region.Unframed. Oil on board.
Willem Jan van den Berghe (1823–1901) was a documented Dutch painter based in Middelburg, with works sold at Christie's, AAG Auctioneers, and the Zeeuws Veilinghuis. His auction range runs from $83 to $4,611, with the record at Christie's. Invaluable The back label is posthumous family identification — written after his death on July 9, 1901 — and states this is a Domburgset Landschap (Domburg landscape), a known subject area for Dutch late 19th century painters.
The painting itself is unframed oil on board — dune landscape with thatched farm buildings, luminous sky, characteristic Zeeland coastal subject. No signature visible but the label provides the attribution and provenance directly from the artist's family or estate.
This needs to be sent to a Dutch auction house — the Zeeuws Veilinghuis specifically, or a specialist.
