Painted with the direct, unaffected touch of a painter who knew this land intimately.Attributed by original family label on the verso to Willem Jan van den Berghe (1823–1901) — a documented Dutch painter based in Middelburg, Zeeland, whose work is held in the Zeeuws Museum and has sold at Christie's, the Zeeuws Veilinghuis, and AAG Auctioneers. The handwritten label reads in Dutch: "Domburgset Landschap / door W.J. van den Berghe / overleden te Middelburg / in 1901" — "Domburg landscape / by W.J. van den Berghe / died in Middelburg in 1901." Written posthumously, almost certainly by a family member or estate, connecting this work directly to the artist.Domburg, on the Zeeland coast of the Netherlands, was a celebrated artists' colony that drew Jan Toorop, Piet Mondrian, and many others.
