The Essence of Machine Age Design
This rare pair of "Z" cantilever chairs, designed by the iconic Gilbert Rohde for the Troy Sunshade Company, is a definitive statement of American Streamline Moderne style. Produced as part of the celebrated "Troy Streamline Metal" series in the 1930s, these chairs feature the classic continuous tubular steel frame that provides the signature "springy" comfort Rohde is famous for.
Provenance & History
These particular examples carry a unique history. While they retain portions of their original "Troy Streamline" manufacturer labels, they also feature vintage tags from Rialto Upholstery of Staten Island. This suggests a professional, high-quality restoration performed mid-century, preserving these chairs for a new generation. The upholstery is a classic period-appropriate choice that complements the chrome frames beautifully.
Condition
The chairs are in good vintage condition. The chrome frames remain structurally sound and retain a brilliant luster, showing only minor surface rust consistent with age (primarily located on the lower underside/base), which adds to their authentic patina. The upholstery is well-preserved with no major tears or stains.
