Hand-woven in wool circa 1950-1960, this 5x5 square vintage Peruvian Kilim—traditionally known as a Frazada—is a luminous example of South American textile artistry. A distinctive addition to Rug & Kilim’s curation, this piece captures the vibrant, sun-drenched spirit of the Andes, where ancient utility meets a surprisingly modern, minimalist aesthetic.
On the Design:
A striking blend of folk art charm and geometric symbolism, this vintage Frazada features a vertical-striped field rendered in a warm, “harvest” palette of golden ochre, pumpkin orange, and earthy terracotta, beautifully balanced by soft pink and grey bands.
Historically, these textiles were woven by Aymara or Quechua artisans on narrow backstrap looms; the two resulting panels were then joined by a central hand-stitched seam, accented here by a playful, multicolored “rainbow” stitch.
Dotted across the stripes are delicate, hand-woven diamond motifs—historically significant symbols representing the celestial bodies and the protection of the natural world.
The design’s unfiltered expression and saturated colorway reflect the soul of Highland life, where such textiles served as both essential protective blankets and bold cultural markers.
The rhythmic repetition of the vertical bands is softened by a beautiful, natural abrash, showcasing the organic variations of the hand-spun wool and the weaver's intuitive approach to the dye. This piece is a statement of character and wild elegance—perfect for interiors seeking an infusion of global narrative, warmth, and texture.
