This impressive wardrobe was crafted around 1890 and has been given a fresh coat of paint. Stylishly and uniquely restored, its powerful architectural structure—featuring twisted columns, a molded cornice, and richly carved ornamental panels—creates a grand and elegant effect.
Historical Context:
Large wardrobes of this type became an increasingly common feature of middle-class bedroom furnishings in the late 19th century. With growing prosperity and the increasing differentiation of private living spaces, there arose a need for spacious storage furniture for clothing that was both functional and representative.
Features:
– Double-leaf mirrored doors with profiled frames and ornamental carving
– Turned solid columns on the front sides with a robust cornice and base section
Design:
The cabinet follows typical design principles of historicism, combining architectural structure with ornamental elements. The robust columns and the heavily profiled cornice lend the piece a vertical structure, while the mirrors visually open up the front and simultaneously expand its functional capacity.
Function:
Historically: A wardrobe used to store clothing in the bedrooms of middle-class households. Today: Can still be used as a wardrobe or as a spacious storage unit for textiles, outerwear, or linens.
Dimensions in cm:
Height 242 × Width 166 × Depth 61 cm
Material and condition:
Solid oak. The wardrobe is in very good and sturdy condition with age-related signs of wear. The surface has been decoratively refinished and redesigned; the interior reveals the original wood grain. The construction and functionality have been professionally inspected. Can be completely disassembled for transport.
