Giuseppe Gambogi (1862–1933) – Elegant Alabaster Sculpture
of the Work
A refined period alabaster sculpture depicting a young woman in a moment of intimate abandon and relaxation. The figure is languidly reclining on a padded armchair (probably a bergère), her arms raised behind her head in a gesture of spontaneous sensuality and her eyes half-closed in a dreamy expression.
The work is an excellent example of the Art Nouveau style, characterized by flowing lines and a particular attention to the grace of the female form. Gambogi's mastery is clearly evident in his attention to detail:
The drapery: The light robe clings to the body, delicately defining the figure.
The contrast of textures: The smooth finish of the leather contrasts harmoniously with the finely crafted texture of the cushions and fringes of the armchair.
The Pose: The pyramidal composition, yet dynamic in the twisting torso, conveys a profound sense of calm and bourgeois luxury.

Biographical Notes on the Artist
Giuseppe Gambogi (Livorno, 1862 – 1933) was an internationally renowned Italian sculptor, part of the circle of Tuscan artists who made alabaster and marble famous between Florence and Pisa.
Trained in the Tuscan Realist movement, Gambogi specialized in genre subjects, female figures, and elegant romantic scenes. His work was enormously successful on the European and American markets of the time, thanks to his ability to blend academic classicism with the new trends of Art Nouveau. His works are sought after by collectors for the incredible "softness" he imparted to stone materials, making them almost vibrate with life.
