A Victorian architectural form Portland Stone bolection fireplace surround, with moulded shelf set above plain frieze, the opening surrounded by shallow ogee moulded frame, raised on shaped block feet.
English, late nineteenth century.
The arrangement of the bolection mould frame and the unadorned frieze capped by the shelf takes note from early George II architectural styles and was popular for use surrounding the fenestration of buildings of the period. Examples of this treatment can be found in such publications as ' A Book of Architecture, Containing Designs Of Buildings And Ornaments. By James Gibbs.' (London, 1728).
Portland Stone originates from the Isle of Portland in the English Channel. The material is synonymous with London being used extensively throughout the built environment throughout the ages with evidence of its use by The Romans. It is an Oolitic Limestone from the Late Jurassic period which gives it an astonishing approximate age of 150 millions years old.
