This impressive late 19th century French jardiniere is marked E.G. and is cautiously attributed to Édouard Gilles, although the attribution remains preliminary and should be treated as such. The piece combines a substantial ceramic body with elaborate gilt-bronze mounts, including pierced upper and lower galleries, scrolling side handles, and expressive mask-form feet, creating a richly theatrical silhouette in the taste of the French decorative arts of the period.
The deep cobalt-blue ground is contrasted by a striking turquoise-glazed interior and enriched with raised ornamental scrollwork. At the centre sits a circular hand-painted glass medallion depicting a young figure in historical dress against a vivid red background. This portrait insert is one of the most visually distinctive features of the piece and gives the jardiniere much of its decorative character.
The jardiniere shows clear age and later intervention. The central glass medallion has suffered damage, including multiple cracks, losses, and visible restoration with retouching to the red ground. The ceramic body appears to have been later overpainted in blue, and areas of gilding also seem to have been refreshed. Two of the left-side feet are slightly bent, causing the piece to stand with a minor tilt, though the bronze elements may be professionally adjusted if desired.
Despite these condition issues, the piece remains highly decorative and displays with strong visual impact. It is best appreciated today as a large statement interior object with 19th-century character, rather than as a pristine collector’s example.
Condition
Antique condition with visible age and restoration. The hand-painted central glass medallion has significant cracking, losses, and old retouching. The blue surface of the ceramic body appears to have been later overpainted, and parts of the gilded decoration seem refreshed. Two left feet are slightly bent, causing a minor tilt when standing. General wear, rubbing, oxidation, and surface irregularities throughout consistent with age and use.
