a wonderful lithograph of marguerite of navarre, created in the early 20th century from an original renaissance-era plate, circa 1530, designed by the painter jean clouet. A copy of this plate, dated 1877, is held in the bilbao museum. Engravings with the title “marguerite of navarre…” frequently appeared in the 18th and 19th centuries, reproducing original paintings for editions of literary works. During this period, it was very common to reproduce antique portraits in the form of engravings to disseminate the image of historical figures, publishing them in books, collections, or series of "great figures."
queen marguerite of angoulême is known as queen consort of navarre through her marriage to henry ii of navarre. She was the sister of francis i of france and was a prominent writer, humanist, and patron of intellectuals and religious reformers. She is known as the "tenth muse," having reached the same level as intellectuals like leonardo da vinci.
she was a patron of religious reformers, gaining considerable religious influence, and promoted a sentimental mysticism that earned her accusations of heresy from the sorbonne. She is considered by many historians to be the "first modern woman" for her intellectual refinement and her advocacy for women's rights. Her literary masterpiece is the heptameron, a collection of 72 stories that explore love, religion, and the female condition from a modern perspective.
