A delicate watercolor engraving based on the famous composition *The Calmady Children*, created in 1823 by Sir Thomas Lawrence, one of the most representative works of child portraiture in English Romantic painting. The original is housed at the MET in New York.
In Lawrence’s work, the two Calmady sisters appear closely united in a pyramidal composition within a round frame and a neutral background that intensifies the relationship between the figures. This version is an engraving colored with watercolors, which distinguishes it from the original in the intensity of the colors—much softer—further softening the image.
This type of reproduction reflects the dissemination of canonical images of British painting in the 19th century, allowing them to circulate in domestic settings and among collectors. This small work features a square frame, crafted from gilded wood and richly decorated with stylized plant motifs.
