Soliflore Vase in Opaline Glass and Painting by Roger Chapelain-Midy. 20th Century.
Height 30.5 cm. Diameter 13 cm. Weight 680 grams.
This is very likely one of his only works on opaline glass, which is rare.
Roger Chapelain, known as Roger Chapelain-Midy, born August 24, 1904, in Paris and died in the same city on March 30, 1992, was a French painter, lithographer, illustrator, and theater designer.
His inspiration was strongly influenced by Surrealism and the fantastic.
At a very young age, Chapelain-Midy acquired the foundations of his art by copying the great masters at the Louvre, and completed his training with lessons at the Académie Colarossi. In 1927, he submitted his first work to the Salon d'Automne. At this time, he received friendly advice from Charles Picard-Ledoux.
In 1930, he made his debut at the Drouant Gallery. He created advertising illustrations to support himself. He received the Prix des Muses, which allowed him to discover Italy. He then traveled extensively in Italy, the Netherlands, England, Belgium, and Spain. His love of travel was inseparable from his painting, and he drew inspiration from the many discoveries he made abroad.
In 1935, he exhibited at the Bernheim Gallery. In 1937, he created his first decorative works: the Théâtre du Palais de Chaillot and the Syrian Pavilion at the International Exposition, in collaboration with Jean Picard-Ledoux. He was considered one of the young painters emerging from the French tradition, on whom all hopes were pinned. His work is characterized by a search for magic and illusion. He based his works on mystery and wonder, and this dreamlike world would soon define him as a painter.
In 1934, the City of Paris and then the French State made their first purchases of his work, inaugurating a series of acquisitions that continues to this day. Similarly, foreign museums began acquiring his works as early as 1937. His painting represents the contemporary French figurative school abroad.
In 1937, he received the Carnegie Prize in Pittsburgh. In 1939, he held a solo exhibition at the Galerie Montaigne. An exhibition organized at the Amigos del Arte gallery in Buenos Aires provided the opportunity for a long trip to Argentina, a source of inspiration.
He exhibited annually at the Galerie Charpentier between 1954 and 1958. During this period, he designed numerous sets and costumes, notably for the Paris Opera (Mozart's The Magic Flute in 1954). He also created several mural decorations.
In 1948, at the invitation of the Egyptian government, he taught at the Cairo School of Fine Arts, exhibited in Cairo and Alexandria, and visited Egypt. In 1950, he exhibited at the French Art Institute in London, and in 1954 at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York. This piece has an attribution mark,
