Vico magistretti edison table for cassina
an elegant system of cross-shaped connectors used in gas lamps gave vico magistretti the idea for this glass table that grew out of a desire to express the beauty of industrial architecture.
prized by the renowned architect, he took it home as the dining table for his house in milan. Edison narrates industrial modernity through the ready-made concept. In this case, a technical solution sparked the idea for an original design that puts on display a design found in milan’s old gas company.
clearly made up of two parts, edison is a design table with a jointed structure that changes configuration based on the shape of the table top. The top comes in rectangular, square or round shape and only in glass, to allow the underlying structure to be admired.

inspired by the ready-made concept, edison is the table vico magistretti designed in 1985 as a tribute to the elegance of industrial design, expressed through the special system of cross-shaped joints used to connect the pipes for gas lamps. A system borrowed by the architect to create the load-bearing structure for the table. Depending on the shape of the table top, the structure changes configuration in order to support the glass, material of choice because it allows the joint system to be visible. Edison is the table magistretti preferred for the dining room in his own home in milan and that cassina relaunches with square, rectangular or round top.
