Hand-knotted in lush, high-pile wool in Sweden circa 1960-1970, this 2x4 vintage Swedish Rya rug is a bold new addition to Rug & Kilim’s curation of iconic, collectible mid-century Scandinavian rugs of this provenance.
On the Design:
This vintage Swedish Rya rug presents an abstract composition defined by sweeping, organic forms in gray, blue and cream that move across the field with a strong sense of rhythm. The high pile softens the geometry into painterly contours, allowing the motifs to read as both graphic and atmospheric depending on the viewer’s distance.
Subtle shifts in tone and density create depth within the design, while the contrast between the open ground and the darker linear accents gives the piece structure without interrupting its fluidity. Rooted in the mid-century Scandinavian preference for bold yet expressive textile art, the rug balances a sculptural surface with a distinctly modern, almost gestural visual language.
Condition:
This vintage Swedish rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.
