This 3x6 vintage Finnish tapestry is a rare and sophisticated acquisition from Rug & Kilim’s curation of mid-century Nordic textile arts. A masterwork by the renowned weaver Maija Kolsi-Mäkelä, this piece was produced by the celebrated Helmi Vuorelma Oy in Lahti, Finland, circa 1950-1960. Entitled “Kaksonen” (which translates to “Twin”), the work is a stunning example of the traditional double-weave technique, characterized by its intricate construction and enduring structural integrity.
On the Design:
This vintage tapestry enjoys a bold, avant-garde design that captures the spirit of Finnish modernism through a geometric lens. The composition centers on two large, mirrored circular motifs, reflecting the title “Kaksonen” assigned to the work by Maija Kolsi-Mäkelä. Each form is quartered into alternating segments of deep teal, indigo, and navy blue, punctuated by rhythmic "raindrop" dots that lend an organic energy to the structured field.
The technical mastery of Maija Kolsi-Mäkelä is evident in the double-weave process, where two independent layers of material and two sets of warps are interlocked on the same loom. This specific method yields a reversible and exceptionally durable design with a crisp, architectural presence.
The neutral, earthy beige-brown ground provides a grounded contrast to the vibrant "cool" tones of the motifs, evoking the shifting light of the Finnish landscape. It is a sophisticated contribution to the Scandinavian Modern aesthetic, offering a serene presence that anchors any mid-century-minded space.
Condition:
This vintage Finnish tapestry further enjoys good condition with some very minor subdued wear along the vertical borders—intended for use in wall-hanging projects only.
