He chose her to play the role of the odalisque in a series of Oriental-inspired compositions spanning the 1920s. Lying languidly, her left arm folded behind her head, she does not merely strike a pose: she inhabits it. Matisse’s odalisque is not an exotic fantasy, but a pretext for exploring the contrasts between different textures. The hatching creates a constant dialogue between the light and shadow on the model’s bare torso, conveying the warmth and weight of a body in the light of the studio.
