Elegant and sculptural, this Italian coffee table—attributed to Paolo Buffa and produced by Arrighi Serafino in the 1950s—expresses a refined dialogue between craftsmanship, proportion, and decorative restraint. Executed in solid cherry wood, the table is defined by a circular glass top set within a finely stepped wooden frame. The layered edge—clearly visible in the details—creates a subtle architectural rhythm, framing the transparency of the glass while emphasizing the precision of the woodworking. Beneath, a secondary circular tier introduces depth and structure: a beautifully crafted open lattice shelf, where the strict geometry of the grid contrasts with the softness of the surrounding forms. Both functional and ornamental, it reveals the quality of traditional joinery and the careful balance of the composition. The structure is supported by four slender legs, gently tapered and flowing upward into sculptural curved supports. These elements—almost arch-like—connect seamlessly to the top frame, creating a continuous, fluid line. This detail is particularly characteristic: a synthesis of control and movement, where the rigidity of the circle is softened by organic transitions. The cherry wood presents a rich, warm tone, with a lively grain that becomes especially evident along the curved elements and the carved edges. Subtle variations, minor marks, and a natural patina consistent with age contribute to the authenticity of the piece, without affecting its overall clarity or elegance. Light plays across the surfaces—resting on the glass, catching the rounded profiles, and filtering through the openwork shelf—enhancing the sense of lightness despite the table’s solid construction. A refined and expressive example of mid-century Italian design, where structural logic and decorative sensitivity coexist in perfect balance. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
