ARIEL
from The Tempest by William Shakespeare
Ariel, spirit of the air and central figure in Shakespeare's The Tempest, is an ethereal and ever-changing creature who embodies the invisible force of the elements and a profound desire for freedom, suspended between service and aspiration to independence, capable of moving wind, music, and illusions in a poetic dimension that still fascinates today with its lightness and mystery.
Etching and engraving with refined and intense watercolor coloring.
The engraver: Charles William Sharpe (1818–1899) was a British engraver active during the height of the Victorian era, specializing in line engraving, stippling, and mixed media. Born in Birmingham and educated at home (he was also the son of an engraver), he worked primarily in London, distinguishing himself for his translation of contemporary artists' works onto plates.
Based on a subject by Henry James Townsend
Period: circa 1873
The work is presented in an elegant, finely crafted, silver-plated frame, closed at the corners with decorative details. It is accompanied by a double mount in shades of blue that harmoniously complements the ethereal nature of the subject.
Dimensions: 44 x 34 cm
