Jan Willem (Jan) Wittenberg was an important Dutch painter and printmaker, known primarily for his subtle still lifes and nature studies. His painted oeuvre is estimated at only 300 works.
Born on September 19, 1886, in The Hague, Wittenberg grew up in an artistically stimulating environment. He received his formal training at the renowned Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. There he studied under Floris Arntzenius, a prominent figure of the Hague School.
Although Wittenberg trained in The Hague, he developed a style that differed significantly from the atmospheric looseness of the Hague School.
A turning point in his life was his move to Scherpenzeel (Gelderland) in 1923. Far from the hustle and bustle of The Hague, he found the necessary peace and quiet in the rural surroundings for his focused work. This isolation reinforced the intimate, understated character of his paintings.
Wittenberg belonged to the group of "Dutch Realists" of the early 20th century. He did not seek radical abstraction or avant-garde experiments, but rather the perfect representation of reality in its simplest form.
He died on September 24, 1963, in Scherpenzeel. Today his works are represented in important Dutch collections, including the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, where his prints are particularly valued. This piece has an attribution mark,
