Wrought iron has been used for centuries in architectural applications, prized for its strength, durability, and malleability, allowing for intricate decorative designs. During the Victorian era, wrought ironwork reached a peak of popularity, adorning everything from grand estates to modest homes with elaborate gates, fences, balconies, and grilles.
This piece has exceptional color and patina. It comes from Belgium and was purchased at the Round Top Show many years ago. It is a beautiful statement piece.
This particular piece, with its repeating motifs and robust construction, likely served as a decorative panel within a larger fence or gate system. Such elements were often custom-made, reflecting the prevailing artistic styles and the owner's status, and are now sought after as architectural salvage for restoration projects or as standalone decorative features. The back side has two 1” rings top and bottom to slide a bar through for stability or to hang (see pictures).
