Robert Wood (1717-1771) was an Irish-British traveler, classical scholar, civil servant and politician. An influential record was compiled of Wood's visit to Palmyra in 1751, during which he and his companions examined the remains of the buildings and recorded inscriptions from the classical era. He took careful measurements and drawings of the ancient Roman ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek. The results of these were published in 1753 and 1757 in both English and French editions and were among the first systematic publications of ancient buildings. Both works were of great influence on neoclassical architecture in Britain, Continental Europe and America. He was accompanied by the draftsman Giovanni Battista Borra, who drew the illustrations used in the book with 59 etched and engraved plates. These are three of those plates.
*In 270 CE, Palmyra, Syria rebelled against Roman rule and succeeded in temporarily conquering a large swath of the Middle East before Rome was able to defeat the Palmyrene army. Following another uprising in 273, the city was sacked and much of it was destroyed.
