Attributed to the Oaxaca region of Mexico, this example is known as a "negrito colmilludos" mask and would have been worn with large wooden tusks emerging from the cheeks. Worn with headdresses and full-body costumes, these hand-crafted masks allowed dancers to embody other characters and tell stories of local tradition, regional history, colonization, and moral teaching.
