This impressive glazed vessel dates to the mid-19th century and was used to store condiments or pickles in a Qing-dynasty kitchen. Shaped by hand, the large jar has an elegant, tapered form and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth tones in the manner of cizhou ware.
Loosely brushed characters and botanical motifs decorate the shoulders and sides, painted in iron brown pigments atop a creme-white clay slip. The sides and neck are sparsely banded with concentric lines and borders of freeform brushwork. Marked with wear and firing imperfections, the sculptural jar has only become more beautiful with time.
