Sculptural lanterns of carved stone or wood are traditionally placed throughout Buddhist temple grounds or courtyard gardens to contrast lush foliage and cast light on their surroundings. This Japanese stone lantern (ishi-dōrō) is a low-lying form known as a legged lantern (yukimi-dōrō), defined by its four-leg base, six-sided fire box and square umbrella with a simple finial.
Legged lanterns unite the four elements of a classic garden - water, stone, plants and architecture. Tucked within the garden, the lantern is traditionally placed beside a body of water, with three legs submerged and one on land.
