The polished stone top is an opaque mineral known as "painting stone," traditionally used in Chinese scholars' rocks or screens for its resemblance to calligraphy scrolls brushed with ink. Like Japanese iwakura rocks imbued with sacred meaning, the intricate stone inspires awe in nature and its endless beauty.

For use as a coffee table, the painting stone slab is paired with four sculptural legs of hand-turned red cedar. A local Chicago artisan carves each leg from a solid block of wood, using handheld tools to create spherical forms that preserve the natural contours and expressive grain.

This sculptural table consists of five separate pieces. The stone top is not affixed to the wooden legs and its heavy weight keeps it stable. The stone top weighs approximately 300 lbs. See less
