Lapie. Titled Mappemonde en Deux Hémisphères, the composition presents the world in two circular projections, offering a visually balanced and classically inspired representation of global geography during the early 19th century. The map divides the world into eastern and western hemispheres, with Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia shown on the left, and the Americas on the right. This format allows for a harmonious composition while maintaining clarity across continents and oceans. The engraving captures the geopolitical understanding of the time, with national boundaries, major cities, and coastal features carefully delineated and enhanced by subtle original hand coloring. The oceans are expansively rendered, with delicate linework and classical nomenclature such as Grand Océan and Océan Austral, reinforcing the scholarly character of the atlas. The polar regions are included within the circular format, adding to the completeness of the representation. Fine hachuring is used to indicate terrain and coastal relief, contributing to both readability and aesthetic refinement. The engraving was executed by Pierre Antoine Tardieu, a member of the esteemed Tardieu family of French engravers, known for their precision and contribution to scientific and cartographic works. His refined linework ensures excellent clarity while preserving the decorative elegance of the sheet. The restrained hand coloring highlights political divisions without overwhelming the composition. This map is both a sophisticated decorative object and a historical document, reflecting the global perspective of early 19th-century Europe. The double-hemisphere format makes it particularly attractive for interior display, serving as a focal point in a study, library, or curated gallery wall. Note: This map is an original antique engraving and not a reproduction. It is offered unframed. Frame shown for presentation purposes only. Condition: Very good condition overall. Light toning consistent with age and a central vertical fold as issued. Margins are wide and clean. Minor spotting visible, primarily in the outer margins. No significant tears or restorations observed. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: This map would present beautifully in a wide dark walnut or ebonized frame with a generous ivory mat, emphasizing its symmetrical composition. For a more contemporary interior, a slim black frame with a floating mount can create a refined gallery presentation. Technique: Engraving with original hand coloring Maker: M.
