In the tradition of Photorealism, this work aligns itself through its technical precision with a movement that documents the everyday with unerring objectivity. While artists like Ralph Goings perfected the cool aesthetics of glass and reflections, Rob de Vries uses this technique here to dissect the material reality of industrial products. The choice of subject—a ketchup bottle—also draws a direct parallel to Pop Art and recalls the iconic works of Andy Warhol. However, through the photorealistic execution, the mass product is lifted out of its purely graphic consumer world and transformed into a physically tangible, almost monumental presence.
The representation in Which other? from the series Memories of a happy childhood places a reclining ketchup bottle at the center of the composition. The masterful handling of light is particularly evident in the translucency of the red contents and the sharp highlights on the glass body. De Vries addresses a symbol of everyday culture, with the open cap and the small dab of ketchup creating an immediate, almost narrative snapshot. Within the series, the object acts as a visual anchor for nostalgic memories of the carefree familiarity of childhood tastes, captured with unerring clarity. This piece has an attribution mark,
