This finely engraved and delicately hand-colored map depicts Saxon England during the early medieval period, illustrating the division of the country into its historic kingdoms prior to unification. Published in London in 1817 by Robert Wilkinson as part of his renowned Atlas Classica, the map was intended as a scholarly aid to understanding early British history and the development of the English nation. Titled 'Saxon England', the map presents the Heptarchy—the seven principal Anglo-Saxon kingdoms—including Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex, and Wessex. Each kingdom is clearly delineated and enhanced with subtle original hand coloring, allowing for an immediate visual understanding of the political landscape of early medieval England. Wales and Cornwall are also shown, providing broader geographic context. The map is rich in historical and geographical detail, with numerous towns, rivers, and early settlements carefully marked. Important early centers such as York, London, Canterbury, and Winchester are prominently identified, reflecting their significance in political, religious, and cultural developments. A notable feature is the inclusion of explanatory text regarding Saxon spelling conventions, adding an additional layer of scholarly interest. Engraved with clarity and precision by E. Bourne, the map exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of early nineteenth-century British cartography. The balanced composition, soft pastel coloring, and crisp typography make it both an informative historical document and an elegant decorative piece. Wilkinson’s Atlas Classica was produced at a time of renewed interest in Britain’s early history, and this map captures that intellectual curiosity, offering a visual reconstruction of a formative period in the development of England. It remains highly appealing to collectors of British history, early medieval studies, and decorative antique maps.
